U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 24 2012

Prices of framing lumber -- particularly Std&Btr, #2, and #2&Btr, -- weakened in uneven trading. Southern Pine led the way down, with prices posting across-the-board double-digit declines. Canadian and western species also weakened. While Western S-P-F remained most resilient, traders noted that weakness was spreading, with some key prices slipping after several weeks in which mills were in a standoff with buyers. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite fell $7, to $334.

Structural panel markets were a mixed bag. OSB sales cooled as loads purchased earlier worked through the system. However, prices held to a firm footing, and in some markets they advanced. Southern Pine plywood prices stayed on the same path they have been on for several weeks. Rated sheathing thick panels were the most vulnerable and readily available. Northeast retailers purchased western Fir plywood more actively to replenish parched inventories. Mill sales to agricultural bin producers slowed, but sales of CC to Canada maintained their pace.
