| While severe weather continued to
hinder job site activity across much of the continent, sales of framing
lumber picked up at midweek. For many dealers, it was a matter of
needing to replenish bare-bones inventories. Some buyers reported a slug
of jobs opening up in March, and the need to get lumber rolling could
wait no longer. Buyers also saw weakening prices early on as a buying
opportunity. Prices firmed in late trading, but failed to recover all
their losses, and the Framing Lumber Composite dipped $4, to $293.

Panel market
Structural panel markets kicked into high gear. OSB sales heated up in a
big way Wednesday and Thursday, allowing mills in most regions to push
up quotes and continue selling. Action in OSB spilled into the Southern
Pine plywood market late Tuesday and Wednesday. Rated sheathing prices
initially bounced back close to the levels producers reported at the end
of last week. Western Fir plywood buyers acknowledged that demand from
China was affecting production costs and some mills were determined to
hold their quoted prices.
