| With many buyers in an
inventory-reduction mode prior to year-end, mill sales dragged. Buyers
across parts of the country also cited wintry weather that had quashed
already limited consumption. Trading in some species, notably S-P-F and
Southern Pine, picked up modestly on Wednesday. But sales sputtered
thereafter, and the heavier midweek volumes usually sold at lower
prices. Elsewhere, mills fell back on order files where they could, but
cracks in prices were widely evident.

Panel market
Structural panel sales were inconsistent. Dull sales left most OSB
prices drifting sideways. Demand at the retail level was spotty at best.
Thin production, and the prospect of even less output due to approaching
year-end shutdowns, propped up prices in some regions. Trading in
Southern Pine plywood was quiet. But producers were able to slide
through the week relying on order files to hold to their list prices. In
western Fir plywood, secondaries in the Northeast offering prompt
shipments found steady activity from inventory-starved dealers.
