| While sales slowed Thursday, the week as a whole brought better
action than many traders expected in advance of a holiday. This was
most evident in western species and in Western S-P-F. Lean inventories
and jobs needing coverage forced some buyers of these species to step
in before they had intended to. Stronger sales to customers offshore
also provided some lift. 9-foot studs in 2x4 and 2x6 were standouts.
Dry Fir producers fielded inquiries for 9s from non-traditional
markets such as Florida and Alabama.

Price trends were mixed in structural panel markets. OSB prices were flat to
down on the eve of the holiday weekend. Much of the week's telephone activity
consisted of end users tracking shipments with their suppliers. Active sales
Thursday prompted most Southern Pine plywood producers to bump quotes up as the
day progressed. Producers reported order files at least into the week of
September 12. Western Fir plywood order files crept later into September, and
prices of sheathing moved slightly higher.
