| Traders reported a continued slow grind in framing lumber
markets, and mills struggled to match sales with production. Prices
weakened across all regions and species. The week's dismal global and
domestic economic news, including a weak U.S. housing report and yet
another sharp sell-off on Wall Street Thursday, set a negative tone as
the week wound down. Futures reacted Thursday with a limit-down move.
Summer heat and back-to-school distractions were cited as additional
factors in the South.

Structural panel sales slowed to a crawl. Demand for OSB was muted,
and prices finished flat or down. A few mills still had loads
available to ship next week, but most were booked into the week of
August 29 or September 5. Another very slow week in Southern Pine
plywood forced some producers to seek orders for their rated sheathing
output, usually by opening to counters. Western Fir plywood traders
waited patiently as a stagnant pace lingered. Mill order files for
sheathing stalled in the week of August 29.
