U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 42 2011

Framing lumber trading grew quieter as the week progressed. Many key decision-makers were out of their offices by Wednesday en route to the NAWLA Traders Market in Las Vegas. Traders left behind had few prospects to pursue in a market lacking urgency on the buy side. Prices eroded in almost all species. Producers rarely chopped asking levels aggressively, opting instead to entertain counters from buyers presenting inquiries. When possible, mills worked to mitigate downward price pressure by providing highly specified tallies and prompt shipments.

Structural panel prices fell hard, with plywood bearing the brunt of the downward slide. Contrary to the sharply lower prices reported in some plywood markets, sales of OSB were comparatively sleepy. Southern Pine sheathing prices were in a near-collapse as several producers opened to huge counters to move their output. Western Fir plywood mills offered double-digit discounts on sheathing, garnering a few bites, to move shipment times in some cases to the week of October 31.
