U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 41 2011

Trading in framing lumber lacked spark after the previous week's faster finish. Monday holidays in the U.S. and Canada got the week off to a slow start, and mill sales sputtered from there. In the West, a modest flow of fill-in orders gave the market liquidity, but the overall pace in that region and elsewhere disappointed. While a few early price gains were posted on momentum from last week's action, narrowly mixed trends through the week tilted toward the downside.

Weak demand weighed on structural panel markets. OSB sales were uneventful, and prices moved modestly in either direction. Buyers felt little urgency to do more than cover immediate needs. Southern Pine sheathing prices cracked on the eastside as dwindling order files pulled mills into the market in search of orders. Prompt loads were readily available. As order files thinned, western Fir plywood producers that entertained lower prices on sheathing generated sporadic sales.
