U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 9 2012

Steady sales to North American markets and reports of a boost in exports pushed up many framing lumber prices. Meanwhile, prices of 1-inch boards continued to advance across all major species. While tornadoes brought devastation to several towns in the Midwest, and chilly conditions across the nation were noted, lumber continued to move readily through the distribution system. With Southern Pine following the general firming trend, the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price resumed its early 2012 advances after a two-week break.

Structural panel prices continued to advance. OSB prices registered solid, across-the-board gains as buyers who had been skeptics threw in the towel and stepped in. Orders continued to flow to Southern Pine plywood producers fairly steadily, with a surge late Wednesday and Thursday noted by some. In western Fir plywood, recent price increases and extended order files left buyers exercising caution, which ultimately drove further increases.
