U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 21 2012

Framing lumber sales were measured, but that was expected for a week of trading sandwiched between holiday weekends in Canada and the U.S. By some accounts, however, phones were busier than expected, particularly on Wednesday, as buyers sought specified loads that could ship quickly. Truck business outpaced railcars by a wide margin. Prices were flat to mixed, although gainers edged out losers. Wide widths posted the largest gains in random dimension.

Structural panel sales were sporadic. OSB sales varied widely between producing regions, leaving prices all over the map. Western Canada remained a standout. Prices in the South gained modestly. Intermittent replenishment generated enough sales to push most Southern Pine plywood mill order files on sheathing into the week of June 4. Western Fir plywood mills generated mostly truckload sales in the West, although truck availability tightened.
