U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 22 2012

Framing lumber buyers held back amid uncertainty about the market's next move. While wholesalers and distributors placed orders to replenish depleted inventories, the overall sales pace was decidedly slower than in the weeks leading up to the U.S. holiday. Orders were heavy to mixes, as buyers limited their exposure and focused on filling inventory holes. Softness crept into prices of key commodities, and the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price slipped $1.

Western Fir plywood was a standout in structural panel markets. Shipments of CC rivaled that of any other week on record for a couple of producers, and continued forward sales helped the broader western Fir market post steady gains. While it was a slower week of sales for most OSB mills, prices in all producing regions continued to tilt upward. Production remained in check, while demand was steady. Several Southern Pine plywood producers entered the short week with holes to fill in next week's rated sheathing order files.
