China abolishes/reduces export for wood products
As of early July, the export tariff rebate rate will be abolished for the following products: bamboo charcoal;
plywood and block board including one layer endangered timber and bamboo; wooden doors, wooden windows,
wooden flooring and small wooden products made of endangered timber; and wooden furniture made of
endangered timber. It has also been announced that the export tariff rebate will be reduced for other wooden
products. Fiberboard, plywood, wooden door, wooden windows, small wooden products and paper products will
have an export tariff rebate reduced to 5%. Wooden and bamboo furniture would have export tariff rebate rates
reduced to 9%.
IFGC spreads wings across and beyond China
In 1996, the State Economic and Trade Commission established the China International
Forestry Group Corp., which has become one of the most important state-owned
corporations. Two overseas companies are under the management of the Group Corp.: CIFEC Compensados Da
Amazonia Ltda in Brazil and Hua-Jia Del Industries Des Bois in Gabon. Additionally, the
company had established seven joint ventures, 22 holding enterprises and 23 joint
stock ventures in China. As a result, a complete production and marketing network has been
established in and outside of China.
The Group has established more than 300,000 ha of fast growing and high yielding timber
plantations in 13 provinces and 800 ha of forest seedlings for cultivation
and set up flower production bases in nine key forestry provinces. It also introduced almost 100 species of tree
seedlings such as Slash Pine and Cedar. The Group Corp. has constructed various large scale and profitable flower
production bases, forest seedling cultivation bases, forest travel reception sites, and fast-growing forest bases.
It has also set up production, development and import and export processing facilities for forest products (including
chemicals) using wood, resin, forest medicines and wild fruits as raw materials. The Group Corp. has been heavily
involved in international cooperation and competition in order to develop the Group Corp into a highly competitive
multinational enterprise.
Erlian Port dispatches first export consignments to Germany
Recently, 47.8 tonnes of semi-finished wood products, valued at US$63,500 have been shipped for the first time
through Erlian Port to Bremen, Germany. The exported products were fine semi-finished wooden products suitable
for window making and manufactured by Markor International Wood Industry Co., Ltd, located in the
timber processing zone of Erlian Port. The buyer of the products was the German ADOLF Furniture Import and Export Company.
Surge in rosewood imports through Piangxiang
The value of rosewood imports through Pingxiang Port in Guangxi rose significantly since the start of 2007.
According to China¡¯s office of customs statistics, rosewood furniture imports
through Pingxiang Port in Guangxi were estimated at 24,700 pieces and valued at
US$2.81 million. This is up 106% in value from the same period in 2006. Pingxiang Port is the largest rosewood
furniture distributing center on the China-Vietnam border and attracts increasing
attention from Southeastern trades.
China unveils plans for reverting farmlands to forests
In response to international concerns about China¡¯s unsustainable environmental practices, the Chinese
government unveiled plans to allow 15 million hectares of farmland to revert to forest
over the next three years. As indicated by Dailyindia.com, this plan would extend
nature reserves, protect biodiversity hotspots and set up a plant monitoring system. The initiative,
which envisages managing of farmland to support wildland conservation, is a collaboration
between three state agencies and Londonbased Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Yuhuan county wins furniture award
The China Furniture Association formally awarded a title for European classical furniture to
Yuhuan County in Zhejiang Province. Located in Taizhou City of Zhejiang Province, Yuhuan
County is one of the 13 national sea islands of China. Although its forest resources are scarce,
90% of the furniture industry on the island produces European classical furniture, with an annual production
capacity of 900,000 furniture sets, making it the largest furniture production base in the Eastern China region and
accounting for 30% of the national market share. 70% of its furniture products has been sold to 30 countries.
