Suspension
of ATPF disrupts timber transport
As a result of the confiscation of faked ATPFs,
IBAMA announced in late October the substitution of ATPFs by a digital
system called System of Documentation of Forest Origin (DOF). IBAMA further
suspended the emission of new ATPFs in
three Amazon basin States (Par¨¢,
Maranh?o and Rond?nia) for a 30-day period in order to restrain
counterfeiting and illegal log transportation.
After harsh criticism from forest companies,IBAMA announced that it would
re-start issuing ATPFs to lumber companies that follow legal procedures and
have wood stocks (logs and lumber) of legally proved origin in the three
Northern States.

is USA¡¯s third solid wood supplier
Brazil is now the third largest exporter of solid wood products to the USA,
after Canada (50% of the wood trade to the USA) and China.
The country is already the largest exporter to the USA in some forest
products segments such as pine plywood from forest plantation areas.
According to an IWPA consultant, Brazilian production has expanded along
with its exports. The consultant concluded that the large Brazilian
exporters follow strict forest management plans.
Paran¨¢ timber exports flourishing
While the solid wood segment in Northern Brazil faces problems
associated with the crackdown on illegal logging, delayed approval of forest
management plans and transportation permits, etc., the Southern Region, in
particular the State of Paran¨¢, has attracted new businesses and export
contracts as a result of its strategic location, existing infrastructure and
good economic development. For the lumber segment and related products, the
State exported US$1.17 billion in 2004, becoming the country¡¯s largest
exporter. The State exported twice as much as the State of Santa Catarina,
the country¡¯s second largest exporter. Out of the ten largest exporting
companies of solid wood products, nine are located in the State of the
Paran¨¢.
