Brazilian
Plywood and Veneer
As
result of trade barriers imposed by major importing markets in the past few
months, Brazilian exporters are now facing new taxes on plywood exports. For
example Brazilian plywood exports to the US now face an 8% import duty and
for the European Union, the import duty on Brazilian plywood is 7%.
Although
Brazilian plywood is competitively price, plywood exports from Brazil are
expected to fall, or at best remain stable, during 2005 as the impact of the
import duties is felt. The
extent of the changes in trade will also be affected by the pace at which
the Brazilian currency moves against the euro and the dollar.
Brazilian exports of solid wood products totalled USD 1.3 billion in the
first four months of 2005, this represents an increase of 18% in comparison
with the same period of 2004 (USD 1.1 billion). However plywood exports in
April fell both in value and in volume.
Tropical
plywood exports contributed USD23.7 million to overall exports of solid wood
products in April (64,000 cubic metres) approximately 21% less than exported
in April, 2004.
Pine
plywood exports were USD36.8 million in April (143,000 cubic metres) a fall
of 7.7% in comparison to the same period of 2004.

Added value production
Entrepreneurs
in Peru are reportedly bringing in new processing plant so as to increase
production of higher value products. Analysts say that the industry moves to
more processing locally is in part due to the limits on trade in Big leaf
mahogany and the necessity to market processed products to adjust marketing
away from high priced mahogany sawnwood. Markets in Europe are being courted
as Peruvian producers see the market demand for tropical timber is good.
Analysts
see the demand for processing equipment increasing in Peru as more and more
companies expand drying and moulding capacity.
