the region producers are progressively cutting back on log exports in
response to government initiatives to promote local processing and this
looks set to result in firmer prices in the third quarter. FOB

have not moved in the past two weeks but producers remain confident that

prospects in Europe looking more bleak.

Sawnwood Prices Brazil In
the past five years, the Brazilian forest sector has been consolidating
its focus on foreign markets. Exports have tripled to US$3.85 billion in
2004. The State of Paraná is Brazil's major wood exporting state with a
30% share of Brazil's exports of solid wood products. Paraná has
increased its exports three-fold from US$477 million, in 2000, to nearly
US$1.2 billion in 2004. For
2005, ABIMCI expects a 20% increase in exports of solid wood products, and
a 7% increase in forest sector revenues, which amount to around US$18
billion a year. Out of this total, 80% is generated from sales in the
domestic market. The
solid wood products sector watches closely changes of US interest rate,
which went up 0.25 percentage points in March. The low interest rate
contributes to a robust growth of the US construction segment, currently
the Brazilian wood products sector's top importer. In contrast, Brazilian
wood product sales to Europe have not shown much growth. Solid
wood producers have diversified the direction of trade of Brazilian solid
wood products, particularly to the Middle East and Asia. Some companies
have already traded with less traditional markets such as Saudi Arabia and
Egypt. Brazil
is among the seven largest forest product exporters. In the early 1990,
its global share was 1.7% in comparison to the current 4%. Today, Brazil
is the largest pine plywood and short fibre (eucalypt) pulp exporter.
Furthermore, the country is the world's third largest tropical sawnwood
and plywood exporter. Sawnwood
