furniture industry in the Amazon has grown in recent years. From 1998 to
2004, ten sub-regions became important furniture clusters and the industry
has become more efficient is adding more value and utilizing less wood raw
materials. Total
annual log consumption in the sector has fallen from 28.3 million cubic
metres to 24.5 million cubic metres. On the other hand production of
lumber, reconstituted wood-based panels and plywood has increased. The
reduction in consumption of logs can be explained as a result of changes
in the marketing strategies of the companies. With the incentive of
increased profits from exports many companies shifted to added value
production and earn more from less wood. The
increase in value-added derives from exports of manufactured wood products
such as doors, windows, and decking, which rose fifteen-fold, increasing
from merely US$ 1.25 million in 1998 to US$ 178 million in 2004. FOB Belem/Paranagua Ports Edge
