Tropical
plywood prices increased on average, 6% in US dollar terms and by 2.2% in
Real.
Pine
plywood exports amounted to 190,200 cubic metres in March 2005 representing
a 32% growth compared to March 2004. The corresponding value exported in
March 2005 was about US$ 48.5 million.
For
tropical, the value exported in March 2005 (US$ 31.9 million) was just
higher than the value of exports in March of last year (US$ 31 million).

In
2004 exports of the Brazilian pine plywood had a 52.2% share of the US
market for softwood plywood, surpassing the 50% quota allowed for developing
countries under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP).
Now,
because of the "competitive need limitation" allowed under the GSP,
Brazilian pine plywood imports to the US will be subject to 8% duty starting
on July 1, 2005.
Some
Brazilian suppliers of softwood plywood have alerted their customers in the
US that they will be unable to absorb the duty and that it is likely that
exports to the US will fall. Brazilian
manufacturers intend to appeal to the U.S. courts, arguing that exports in
2004 were higher due to the exceptional U.S. demand for structural panels
and not to Brazilian domestic production policy.
