from ARPA There
are currently 42 Conservation Units (UCs) in the Brazilian Amazon,
covering around 30.5 million ha of protected forests, according to the
Protected Area Program of the Amazon (ARPA). ARPA
integrates its actions under the supervision of the Directorate of
Protected Areas of the Secretary of Biodiversity, Ministry of the
Environment (MMA). Although
in operation since only 2000, in its first 4 years an estimated 18 million
ha was protected through UCs, half under full protection and half under
sustainable use. However, now a total of 23 UCs have been created,
covering 16 million ha. ARPA,
has the goal of placing under protection 50 million ha in the Amazon
region. To reach such a goal will be necessary to care for the UCs,
strengthen the 16 million ha of new UCs and create at least additional
19.5 million ha of parks, biological reserves, ecological stations,
extractive reserves or sustainable development reserves. According to the
organisations plan, this goal should be reached by 2010.. Atlantic Rain
Forest The
Ministry of the Environment launched a programme that will disburse Real
48 million for projects related to the recovery and preservation of the
Atlantic Rain Forest, cited as the most threatened biome in Brazil. Projects
will be prepared and implemented by non-governmental organisation, under a
possible partnership with universities or public agencies. The
funds were provided to the MMA by the German government and the MMA and
will be used to create federal, State, municipal and private protected
areas, establishment of ecological corridors, forest plantation, research
and promotion of ecotourism. For
the release of the funds, two invitations for projects will be made, at
national and local/regional levels. In
addition to national level invitations, other initiatives will be launched
including implementation of a participative programme for monitoring the
Atlantic Rain Forest; a study on environmental services of the Atlantic
Rain Forest and development of innovative financing mechanisms; awareness
and mobilisation campaign about the biome preservation; and preparation
and implementation of ecological corridor plans in priority areas. Beside this project funding line, the MMA is strengthening the protection of the Atlantic rain forest through the Atlantic Rain Forest Project Law and the Public Forest Management Project Law, both under evaluation in the Senate. According to MMA, only 8% of the original Atlantic Rain Forest area remain. Indonesia Domestic

Brazil The
P&O Nedlloyd Group is reportedly investing USD 20 million to increase
its fleet for the Brazil-Eastern US Coast route. Renamed as Atlantic
Brazil Express - ABX, the new service will have three new ships of 2.500
TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unitThis is expected to improve the service
as, up to 2004, only one ship was allocated to this route. In
2004, the shipping company handled 140,000 TEU from Brazilian ports, 4%
more than in 2003. By late 2005, the ships of the new fleet will be able
to carry around 27,000 TEU to the US and this represents a 90% higher
capacity. The company has said its goal is to have a total transport
capacity of 53,500 TEU by 2006. FOB

and timber sector stakeholders have met with the Ghana Forestry Commission
(FC) recently to discuss the computerised log tracking system due to be in
place in January 2006. At
the workshop Professor Dominic Fobih, Ghana's
Minister of Lands, Forestry and Mines, said that the new
'Validation of Legal Timber Programme' (VLTP) being proposed by the FC is
intended to improve the monitoring of timber harvesting, processing and
exportation. The programme is also to ensure that timber for the
international market was of verified legal origin. The
new system is expected to improve the collection of forest revenue,
eliminate informal payments between industry and forest officials, and
block avenues for illegal timber entering the market and provide an
additional tool to ensure that timber harvesting are within sustainable
limits. Discussion
papers on the VLTP are expected to be ready by May and the procurement of
the tracking system will be concluded by September 2005 after which there
will be an installation and testing period. Over
the past six years Ghana's forestry sector has been almost reformed to
achieve verifiable good governance through effective monitoring and law
enforcement.Significant among the reforms was the introduction of a
competitive bidding process for the allocation of timber resources. Air-dry FAS 25-100mm x 150mm and
