International
demand is pushing solid wood prices up, especially for tropical timbers. On
the other hand, Brazilian plywood prices have been affected by strong
competition from Chinese plywood in Europe. Moreover, current plywood
inventories are reportedly quite high in Europe.
The
tropical plywood exports earned US$ 25.4 million in February (68,000 cubic
metres) some 13% higher than in
the same month of 2004.
Exports
of pine plywood reached US$ 37.5 million in February 2005 (up 17%).

The
Chilean group ARAUCO has now begun its wood panel production in Brazil. The
company recently bought the shares of Placas do Paran¨¢ a company that
produces particleboard and MDF.
With
this new acquisition, ARAUCO is assured of immediate and significant
participation in wood panel market in Brazil, competing with giants such as
Masisa, Tafisa and Duratex.
The
deal struck reportedly totalled some US$ 300 million and included the
acquisition of FAPLAC, a wood panel mill of the Levis Dreyfus Group in
Argentina, as well as shareholding participation in DYNEA BRASIL.
The
entry of the ARAUCO into the Brazil market is part of the company's plans to
extend its participation in the global market. The goal is apparently to be
amongst the top three forest companies in the world in 10 years.
After
the acquisition of Placas do Paran¨¢, ARAUCO owns a particleboard plant
located in Curitiba (State of Paran¨¢), with production capacity of 320,000
cubic metre a year and a MDF plant, located in Jaguaria¨ªva (also in the
State of Paran¨¢) with production capacity of 260,000 cubic metre a year.
As
result of the purchase, ARAUCO the company controls 50% of the shares of
DYNEA BRASIL, a producer of resins, melamine paper and other chemical
products for the wood panel industry.
Even
with the newest acquisition, the trend is that the current ARAUCO plant in
Argentina continues to supply the Brazilian market, at least in the short
run as the Brazilian market for wood based panels continues to be strong and
will continue to grow for some years say analysts in Brazil.
