US$295-300 Ghana The
Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD) of the Forestry Commission
(FC) of Ghana has released the timber export performance for 2004. Ghana
earned Euro 170.5mil. from the export of 455,180 cubic metres of wood
products in 2004 as against Euro162.9mil. from the export of 444,388 cubic
metres of wood products in 2003. The 2004 export performance represent
increases of 4.60% and 2.43% in value and volume respectively over that of
the previous year. The
European Union (EU) continues to be the country's major trading bloc for
wood products and accounted for 56% in value and 53% in volume of exports. A
recent press release said the United States was a steadily emerging
importer of Ghana's wood products, especially for plywood and rotary
peeled veneer and US imports represent around 12% of total exports. The
press release, however, indicated that wood products export to the ECOWAS
sub-region continued to lag behind those of other trading partners. The
country exported 46,919 cubic metres of wood products valued at Euro11.393
million in 2003 to the sub-region. With Senegal, Nigeria, The Gambia and
Sierra Leone being the main markets for plywood and sawn timber. During
2004 the country earned Euro 143mil.
from the export of secondary wood products. Wawa continued to show
resilience as the most dominant and most exportable species, leading a
pack of some 52 other species. Ghana
has now placed an emphasis on plantations of timber species, such Cedrella,
Gmelina and Rose Wood (K. patro) to diversify the resource base. Air-dry FAS 25-100mm x 150mm and

250 Peru Exporters
in Peru are reporting that FOB prices for Mahogany are increasing.
Prices for Mahogany sawnwood (length 6+ feet) for the US market
have reached US$1,400.00-1,450.00 per cubic metre. For Central America
markets the price is at US$1,230.00-1,250.00 per cubic metre. Local
analysts say that this is due to supply problems and the need for
producers to meet CITES requirements. The
Peruvian trade has said that it would not be a surprised if there is a
further increase in international prices for Mahogany in the coming months
particularly as the dollar weakens. Last month the US dollar weakening
against the nuevos soles. In december the exchange rate was 1: 3.30 nuevos soles but by the end of February the rate had fallen
to 1:3.25 nuevos soles. If
the US dollar continues to weaken then Peruvian timber exporters say they
will be forced to increase prices in order to cover operational costs in
nuevos soles. The
producers, on the other hand, say
that the price structures for Mahogany would most likely be little
affected as they can absorb the current level of change in domestic
currency earnings. Analysts
estimate that the Peru's Mahogany exports as a proportion of total exports
will be down about 20% in 2005 as other species are accepted by the
markets. For
