245 Peru Peruvian
timber and wood product exports up to October totalled US$107 mil.
compared to US$89.7 mil. in the same period of 2003, representing a growth
of 19.53%. It is now possible that 2004 exports will exceed the US$ 108
mil. exported in 2003 The
growth of Peruvian timber export values is largely a consequence of an
increase in FOB prices. Exports of timbers such as masaranduba, cumaru,
ipe or cabre uva for friezes
and decking are growing while Mahogany exports have been declining. According
to Customs data, Mahogany export volumes to September 2004, were 12,798
cubic metres 22 % less than in 2003. Data
on other hardwood exports are encouraging
with "other sawnwood" and hardwood mouldings exports growing by
over 107% and 34%
respectively. A similar situation can be reported for plywood whose
exports grew by a surprising 252%. The
main destinations remain the USA (up very slightly) followed by Mexico
(plus 44%) mainly with Virola and plywood exports. China is now the third
placed export market with a good demand being seen for hardwood mouldings. Peruvian
exporters report that Chinese importers are demanding lower prices for
hardwood mouldings. According to some Chinese buyer representatives in
Peru, they can find species such as Cumaru and Cabre Uva, at lower
prices from Bolivia. For

being the main timber and wood products export region of Peru, Loreto port
reportedly still has logistical problems because only one line offers a
service to Mexico and USA. This has been the case for 5 years say analysts
and has prompted exporters to ask the government to find a solution
because the poor shipping opportunities hampers market diversification.
Loreto
exporters are shipping to Tampico (Mexico), Houston and Port Everglades
(USA). Virola is the main export species (72%), followed by Lupuna (Chorisia
sp.) 18and then Spanish
cedar, Mahogany, Marupa (Simarouba
amara), Massaranduba, Cabre Uva, Capinur¨ª (Clarisia sp.), Cumaru, and
Cachimbo. Analysts
estimate that the value of timber exports from Loreto in 2004, will be
around US$24´000,000 representing between about 20% of the total
Peruvian timber exports. Domestic

result of a series of meetings between representatives of different
associations and companies in the timber sector, the Minister of
Production - PRODUCE -
created a Technical Secretariat for Wood and Wood Products. This
secretariat is organizing specialized working groups for Commerce and
Promotion, Investigation and Innovation and Forest and Law that involves
government agencies and private sector representatives. This
secretariat has an ambitious plan for developing the timber sector which
includes commercial missions to the USA, Mexico, China, Central America
and Europe. Several technological missions in order to improve and update
the Peruvian Industry are also planned. The private sector has welcomed this move as they feel this could be the beginning of the modernization of the sector. |
