Plywood and Veneer
The
US market remains firm but in the EU, over supply of pine plywood continues
to force prices down. Brazilian plywood exports still face strong
competition from Chinese products.
Exports
of pine plywood in the first ten months of 2004 reached US$447.5 million, up
69% on the same period in 2003 when exports totalled US$265.3 million.
Tropical plywood, exports were
US$311 million between January-October some 58% higher than January-October
2003.

Prices
of pine plywood on the international markets have been falling over the past
months as a result of an oversupply in main importing markets, such as EU,
where competition has been strong between the Brazilian and the Chinese
plywood.
Despite
the increasing volume sales, Brazilian exporters of pine plywood have seen
revenues fall. After a 16% rise in export revenues from August to September
(when pine plywood exports rose from US$40.5 to US$47.1 million), the export
earnings in October were US$ 45.7 million, a 3% decline. In terms of volume, exports continue to be strong. In the
period August-September 2004 export volumes of pine plywood increased 18%
but in October plywood export volumes only grew by 1.7%. Despite the
slowdown in October, projections of Brazilian pine plywood sales to
international markets for 2004 remains on a record breaking track.
