Some
price movements have been observed and these occurred towards the end of
the month. Most
was the weakness in Azobe prices which have fallen largely because of the
heavy competition from Okan and also Angelem Vermeilho from Brazil which
is on offer at significantly lower prices.
Also demand from European buyers is slack, especially for logs, as
there are now so few hardwood conversion log mills still working in the
Netherlands and Germany especially. Ayous/Obeche
has seen strong demand and prices are up for all grades, following similar
increase last month. On the
other hand prices for Bobolo are down marginally by about Euro 7 per cubic
metre while Bubinga prices are up. Sapele
log and lumber prices are on the weak side due to poor demand and high
production. Traders
in West Africa are saying that they sense that markets are cooling down,
especially in Asia. In
previous reports the swings in prices for Okoume were noted as buying for
the Chinese market first resisted and then accepted price increases. At
the moment the market is swinging the other way and China apparently high
stocks of Okoume and other peeler logs so falling demand from buyers for
China has pushed down prices. India
is now a big buyer of African timbers but reports indicate that Indian
stocks of their favourite species such as Padouk and Belli are high and
buying interest has faded somewhat. FOB

Log Prices Brazil In
October, a slight increase in domestic wood prices was observed. The US
Dollar fell slightly against the Real by around 0.34% during the period.
The increase in domestic prices was mainly due to the high demand for logs
(both pine and tropical) from export-oriented solid wood industries as
well the increases in transport costs as a result of higher fuel costs Logs

Plantations
out-sourced Forest
industries, which have traditionally invested in their own forest
plantations, have been gradually moving to outsourcing raw materials. This
is stimulating small producers to create forest plantations to meet the
growing demands of industry. It
is becoming increasingly difficult to get good land for plantations at
reasonable prices because agricultural land prices have risen in recent
years to the point were the industry cannot afford to invest. According
the Ministry of Environment, Brazil needs to plant 600,000 hectares of
forests per year, demanding an investment of R$ 900 million to meet
industry needs. However, data shows that the area likely to be planted
will fall short of the requirements being forecast at around 400,000
hectares this year and perhaps 500,000 hectares in 2005. At this pace of
establishment wood imports will be required and could come from Argentina
and Uruguay. To
meet the required plantation area expansion, the Brazilian Association of
Plantation Forest Producers (ABRAF) intends to show small rural producers
that plantation forests are a good alternative source of income. At
present only 10% of the 5 million hectares of eucalyptus and pine
plantations is from non industry owned plantations. The greatest to
expanding small land owners in plantations is said to be the red tape
involved and financing difficulties. The
bureaucracy is created by different legislation that the small producer
must follow at municipal, state and federal levels. Even at any one level
there may be more than one entity legislating over the matter which can
hinder potential growers. Lack
of adequate financing programmes, say analysts may also be a difficulty to
the small producer since costs in the first years are very high and
profits come only after seven or eight years. ABRAF apparently has plans
to stimulating forest plantation establishment alongside corn or bean
cultivation to allow an early generation of income during the growing
cycle the plantation forest. Indonesia Domestic

African sawnwood prices remain stable. Sapele sawnwood prices remain soft
and fierce competition is reported against enquiries for Okoume lumber. Some
exporters are considering slowing or halting Okoume sawnwood production
until prices improve. Traders
are expecting November to be a difficult trading month with a lot of
negative sentiment in the market. FOB
