Inter-African Forest Industry Association (IFIA), in its latest
newsletter, is reporting on progress in establishing certification in
Africa. Recently, under the patronage of the Minister and Vice Minister
for Economic Forestry, Waters, Fishing and the Environment Gabon, an
introductory conference took place to create the PAFC Gabon (Pan African
Forest Certification) association. This,
says the IFIA, will enable the ATO/ITTO principles, criteria and
indicators to not only become the reference point when establishing
management plans in Gabon and auditing the certification, but also to be
the anchorage point for the international recognition by the PEFC. Recognition
by the PEFC will, says the IFIA, further promote the management of forests
in Gabon and in Africa in general and could help facilitate access of
products from these managed forests to the international markets. The
Minister is reported as saying said that recognition of the PAFC by the
PEFC was the opportunity for worldwide promotion of
Pan African certification and the ATO/ITTO principles, criteria and
indicators. You will find an account of the
meeting as well as the speeches at www.ifiasite.com Myanmar Teak

together in Amazon INCRA,
the National Institute for Colonisation and Agrarian Reform and IBAMA the
Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources
have said that they will work together in administration of forestry in
the Amazon agrarian settlements. The
idea is apparently to concilidate agrarian reform, environment and
economic development by controlling forest fires and deforestation
practiced by rural farmers settled in the region. The
objective is to create a new exploitation model that values the forest as
a source of income, showing that it is more valuable standing than felled.
The
executive director of INCRA explained that the agreement with IBAMA will
allow for the carrying out of indepth studies on deforestation in the
settlements, the elaboration of a forest inventory and the utilisation of
timber that will be felled. This represents the first step of a programme
that will aim at eliminating deforestation in settlements. Indonesia Domestic
