Papua New Guinea

For the first six months of 2004, PNG exported around 983,740 Cu.m of logs and most went to China, Japan and Korea at an average price of US$57 per Cu.m FOB.

China was the major market taking just over 60% of the logs, followed by Japan (19%) and Korea (10%).

Other markets for PNG logs in the first half year were Vietnam, Taiwan P.o.C, India, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The most common log grade (82%) exported from PNG is saw/veneer grade from natural forest selective harvesting operations. The main species exported are malas (Homalium spp), calophyllum (Callohyllum spp), taun (Pometia pinnata), terminalia (Terminalia spp), pencil cedar (Palaquium spp), PNG Mersawa (Anisoptera polyandra), red canarium (Canarium spp incl C.indicum), erima (Octomeles sumatrana), dillenia (Dillenia spp), burckella (Burckella spp), grey canarium (Canarium spp incl

C.oleosum ), PNG walnut (Dracontomelum mangiferum) and kwila (Instia spp).
