Brazil
Furniture export success
Brazilian
furniture producers project exports of US$850 million for this year, an
increase of 25% in relation to 2003, when international sales reached
US$662 million. However, recent firm market demand and the acceptance of
Brazilian products at international events could lift exports to the US$1
billion target established by the sector four years ago.
Brazil
has been increasing its participation in the global furniture market and
could account for a market share of 1.8% of the US$53 billion traded
worldwide. This is an excellent performance for a country that spent most
of the 1990's with an average annual market participation of just 0.5%.
The
Brazilian performance is due largely to the creation of sectoral
programmes in the late 1990's encouraging international trade. Between
1998 and 2003, Brazil's share of the global furniture trade rose from 1%
to 1.6%. The Brazilian export base, which was made up of just 200
companies in the 1990's, rose to approximately 500 enterprises today.
Brazil's
exports of wooden furniture reached US$ 424.6 million from January to July
of 2004. This is 42.1% higher than in the January-July period of 2003 (US$
298.8 million).
