Plywood and Veneer
Export
prices are reported as relatively stable. In the case of plywood, prices
have been kept steady because the demand in the US remains strong.
The
current low level of demand in Europe is expected to improve as the
European holiday season comes to and end and businesses get back to full
production. Furthermore, higher export volumes are expected to be shipped
to Europe from September onwards as the 2005 import quota by the European
Union kicks in January 2005.
In
the first seven months of 2004, Brazilian pine plywood exports totalled
US$ 314 million, 94% higher than in the January-July period of 2003 (US$
162 million).
Regarding
Brazilian tropical plywood, the value of exports in the first seven months
of 2004 reached US$ 211,3 million, an increase of 70% in relation to the
equivalent period of last year (US$ 124.2 million).
Shortage
of containers
The
shortage of shipping containers is still a problem for the timber industry
in Brazil. There is a shortage of containers at most of the ports in the
country. In the first half of this year, the Paranagu¨˘ port ranked first
in export volumes, where products like soy are shipped in bulk, while
others are transported in containers, such as timber.
The
general cargo sector has been demanding 180,000 containers, an increase of
31% compared to the same period of last year, when exports utilised
137,000 thousand containers. The increased level of exports has led to a
shortage of containers and some exporters are facing difficulties in
meeting export delivery dates.
This
situation resulted in an increase in container costs, which has driven
sawnwood and plywood exporters to consider bulk exports. Currently about
50% of the sawnwood and plywood exports are as bulk cargo and this is
expected to increase in the short term.

Plywood in the US
The
volume of Brazilian plywood exports to the US has been rising. Projections
suggest that more than 1.4 million cubic metres of Brazilian plywood may
reach the US market this year if the current import rate is maintained.
Brazil's
advantage in plywood production is related to the relatively low-cost
operations of its mill production (especially labour costs) compared to US
counterparts.
Some
analysts say that Brazilian mills benefited from almost perfect timing,
entering the US market when prices at home were at historically low
levels.
Although
some observers expect a decline in Brazilian plywood exports to the US,
others say a higher volume of wood products may be shipped to the US
market, especially non-certified panels.
Brazil
traditionally shipped large volumes of non-certified panels to Europe but
these are affected by the European Union import quotas.
Since
Brazilian efforts to expand into structural applications in Europe have
been largely unsuccessful so far, Brazil is likely to redirect its
non-certified plywood exports towards the US.
Initiatives
towards panel certification have been made in Brazil over the last few
years. The PNQM is a good example of the Brazilian effort to expand its
market participation worldwide.
The
National Program for Wood Quality (PNQM) is a programme aimed at
certifying products made under pre-established specifications and
controlled parameters. The program currently certifies pine plywood,
tropical plywood and doors and other products are expected to be included.
Agreements
between PNQM and international accredited bodies have been pursued to make
Brazilian certification recognized worldwide. Gradually, this is
contributing to the successful penetration of structural pine plywood in
Europe.
