News
from the UK As
expected, the Bank of England raised interest rates by 0.25% for the fifth
straight time since November last year. This change has slowed further the
over-heated housing market slightly in that the rate of house price growth
has slowed. The number of new house loans fell by around 9% between May
and June and with consumer credit at record levels in the region of US$1.6
trillion, inflation risks are high. For
businesses the increase in oil prices is causing concern and with the
holiday season in full swing business is quiet. The
UK Timber Trades Federation is back on the promotion trail to support the
"Wood for Good" campaign but the bulk of the contributions for
the new effort are from outside the tropical hardwood and analysts point
out that the campaign will benefit. On the positive side, the requirements
for building insulation are being strengthened and this could have a
positive spin-off for sales of wood products. Log Prices in the UK FOB
