Plywood and Veneer
Brazilian
wood product export prices, particularly prices for plywood, have begun to
fall due to the seasonal low demand in the major markets. The European
Union established a quota for Brazilian plywood which had the net result
of slowing Brazilian plywood
exports to Europe. In addition, US plywood demand for new residential
construction is not growing as fast as in the recent past.
In
the first five months of 2004, Brazilian pine plywood exports totalled
US$211 million, 82% higher than in the January-May period of 2003 (US$ 116
million).
Brazilian
tropical plywood exports in the first five months of 2004 reached US$113.7
million, an increase of 56.2% compared to the same period of last year
(US$ 72.8 million).
Of
the total pine plywood exports, US$112.1
million went to the USA, US$ 85.3 million to the EU, US$3.9 million to
Mexico, and US$ 2.4 million to the Middle East.
For
tropical plywood exports US$ 53 million went to the EU, and US$52 million
to the USA.
Pine
sawnwood exports in the first five months of the year fell 7.9% (US$ 102
million in January-May of 2004 and US$ 111 million in January-May of
2003), while tropical sawnwood exports, grew to US$74.9 million, up 35%
over the same period last year.
