Brazil
Manufacturers
of wood products and furniture in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay
have agreed to coordinate the promotion of their products in Mercosur and
in other markets. This initiative is one of the outcomes of the meeting of
the Wood and Furniture Mercosur Forum, which took place in Buenos Aires
recently.
The
new initiative was drafted with the direct participation of Brazilian
businessmen who expect to expand exports by strengthening the trade in the
bloc. This, they feel could
offset the weak Brazilian market.
Last
year the combined income of the some 50,000 companies in the sector in
Brazil was around R$8.8 billion, well below the R$10.4 billion recorded in
2002, which its self was reduction compared to 2001 and 2000.
For
this year, the manufacturers expect a recovery of 18% in income. In the
first quarter of this year alone, wood and furniture sales expanded 43%
against the same period of last year.
It
is estimated that 90% of the products traded in Mercosur are manufactured
in Brazil. Once the new Wood and Furniture Mercosur Forum initiative is
implemented companies expect to expand their market share.
One
of the main aims of the Mercosur Forum is regional standardisation of
wood-based products, through the Mercosur Standardisation Association (AMN).
