 Francophone West African Log Prices

Some modest price movements have been seen and the recent gains in Sapele and Iroko prices have held very firm.  In contrast to the general upward movement in prices, prices for Ayous B grade logs for Asia are down Euro 15 per cubic metre, otherwise all other price changes are moving upwards.

Fromager/Ceiba prices are up Euro 15 for LM and B grades, Limba/Frake prices also moved up after a long unchanged period.  Padouk B grade log prices are reported as up to the same as the LM grade price level. Also, Doussie blanc/pachyloba prices have suddenly taken an upward turn.

At the moment Sapele and Sipo prices are now the same and exporters say demand for Sapele remains very good.

Freight Rates

The major issue mentioned by exporters is that of ocean freight for the Far East ports.  Freight rates are up around a further US$10 cubic metre but, because of the strong demand for shipping space for wheat, coal and other cargo, there are very few vessels now interested in the West African timber trade.

There are some reports of logs being shipped to French ports and then being trans-shipped into containers for Asian destinations.  Buyers for China are paying up to a further US$2 cubic metre for freight currently and rates are likely to go higher.

Apparently, two French shipping lines have withdrawn some West African services, while shippers in the Cameroon say that they now only have the RoRo Service for sawn lumber but that, as yet, rates have not increased.

Gabon shippers now report very infrequent shipping opportunities, which is causing real financial problems, as they are unable to move contracts in stock ready for shipment.

Some smaller timber producers and exporters in the region are going out of business as it is reported the major French banks are slowly withdrawing support for timber businesses generally.

Domestic Log Prices

 Brazil

Domestic timber prices have risen slightly. Tropical wood product prices increased due to the scarcity of logs, the result of heavy rains that hampered logging.

As for Pine solid wood products, these prices have stabilised at the improved levels and are not expected to rise further, at least in the short term. However, the big increase in pine plywood for export will probably drive up domestic log prices.
