Sapele prices have held the higher levels achieved last month and demand reported as still brisk.  But Iroko is now the star performer, adding  euro 15 per cubic metre for LM and B grade and rising euro 31 plus per cubic metre for BC/C grade logs.

The increase comes as a result of higher demand, low production and delays in shipments of the alternative species from Brazil. Analysts expect that iroko prices will move even higher and say that Portuguese buyers are already looking for supplies of Izombe

Sipo remains out of favour and prices reflect the lack of interst by the market. Prices of other timbers are generally stable and unchanged and no prices changes are anticipated for the 'others' group over the next month.

The government of the Cameroon has released the traditional family cutting rights whereby each family is allowed to cut 100 trees. This has relieved the previous very difficult log supply situation and, as the dry season has begun, sawmills busy stocking up.

Sea freight rates have moved up and are reported at euro 10 per cubic metre up on last month for Europe.  Exporters are saying the shipping opportunities for the Far East is described as catastrophic with very limited immediate availability and delays of up to 2 months are being talked about for shipments from Gabon.  Freight rates for the Far East have shot up by a further US$23 - 30 per cubic metre (liner terms) for most logs and are up US$14 per cubic metre for Okoume logs.

Exporters report that markets are generally steady and prices broadly stable but say that Asian buying is slow because of the sea freight difficulties.

In February, most export prices remained stable. Sawnwood and decking were some of the few exceptions, and prices fell due to poor demand. In the first month of 2004, total Brazilian sawnwood exports reached US$ 68 million, 45% more than in January 2003 (US$ 47 million).

Domestic Sawnwood Prices

 Report from Brazil

On the whole, domestic timber market prices remained stable in the period under review. There was a slight adjustment of the exchange rate which resulted in an adjustment of local prices in dollar terms, prices in Brazilian real are basically the same as they were last month.

Analysts point out that this month's readjustment of COFINS (the Financial Contribution for Social Security) on imported of goods, resulted in some wood-based panel price rises of up to 2% in local currency terms because the cost of imported resin in those products has jumped. Continued impact of COFINS readjustment will be felt in the coming months.
