Francophone West African Log Prices
Sapele prices have held on to the gains made earlier this month.
However Sipo prices remain weak because of poor demand, analysts expect prices to weaken
further.
FOB prices for Bubinga have risen by euro 61per cubic metre for LM and B grades for the
European market and by euro 30 per cubic metre for LM grade for Asian buyers. Producer's
report China is buying Bubinga to balance out some over-stocking of other species. For
Europe, the only price change seen recent has been for Bubinga but there are some modest
downwards adjustments in prices for Asian buyers, for example Acajou B grade reported down
euro 8 per cubic metre.
Fromager and Movingui are both reported down euro 15 per cubic metre in the LM and B
grades while Tali is said to be down a modest euro 4 per cubic metre for LM and B grades.
The most significant price change is the drop in Okoume prices by the SNBG. Prices are
quoted as down 5% for CI (choix industriel) grade, 8% down for CE (choix economique) and
9% down for CS (choix supplémentaire) grades, which China buys in the proportions
of 40-40-20%
However, buyers for China are still not taking up normal volumes from Gabon and still
buying at lower prices from Congo (Brazzaville) and Equatorial Guinea.

Domestic wood prices changed slight as the Real strengthened against the dollar. In
general, these prices are expected to remain stable, at least, in the short term. However,
it is worth noting that pine log prices are likely to continue to increase due to high
demand driving prices higher. As for tropical timber, there are no expectations of
significant price increases
In other news, the State of São Paulo aims to harvest more
state forest plantations in order to reduce harvesting in the natural forest. The idea is
to harvest 1,000 ha per year, which could produce 250,000 cubic metres of wood and provide
a revenue estimated at R$13 million. The species to be harvested are pine and eucalyptus
which were planted in experimental stations and state forests more than 30 years ago. The
state has reportedly about 27,000 ha of forest plantations and intends to replanted felled
areas.

International Sawnwood
Francophone West Africa Sapele sawnwood prices have yet to
respond to the sharply higher log price especially as mills are generally very short of
logs in most species. Ayous, Moabi and Makore prices reported as stable, but Movingui sawn
is under pressure as the log stocks in France are said to be adequate for the next few
months. In contrast Azobe logs are in short supply in Europe and West African producers
expect firm and rising prices for Azobe sawnwood and manufactured products. As with logs,
demand for Sipo sawnwood is weaker.
